When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, “Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
Exodus 32:1 (ESV)
How quick the Israelites were to turn away from God. Despite all the miracles they had seen, the plagues in Egypt, water from a rock, the parting of the Red Sea, despite God having been visibly present and leading them in the pillar of smoke by day and fire by night, despite having heard Him speak to Moses and promising they would follow all God's commands, in their impatience, they turned away and broke the first two of God's commands to them - you shall have no other gods before Me, and neither make nor bow down to graven idols. They had experienced God's presence and miracles firsthand, yet still turned aside to worship an object made by human hands.
How easy it is for us as well to turn away from God to the objects of our own devices. Have you not had experiences in your life that could only be explained as coming from God? Fortunately for the Israelites, they did still have Moses to intercede for them when they sinned. More fortunate for us, we have Jesus Christ to intercede on our behalf. Turn to God, receive Christ who died for our sin and rose that He may now intercede for us.
